Brad has been shop supervisor of Park City School District in Park City, Utah for over 18 years. Park City was the location of many of the 2002 Winter Olympics venues. "We are accustomed to a lot of snow here in Park City. We often joke that we only have one day of summer which is usually August 1st. Fall starts the next day, lasting till October 1st when winter begins again. There is no spring. Although not a true statement it has snowed on July 4th several times in my time here." The last frost usually occurs on June 17th and the first frost before the 1st of September. Our first snowfall each season comes around the middle of September each year.
Since most of our school season is consumed by cold weather we run traction tires year round on each drive axle. Our entire bus fleet is equipped with automatic tire chains and we purchase Webasto auxiliary heaters. We are fortunate in that we have heated indoor parking for every bus and many of the district cars and trucks. We occassionally have to call school because we cannot get the vehicles out of the bus garage due to twelve to thirty six inches of snow at the bus garage received in a single snow storm.
Even with the tire chains and best traction tires available on our rear engine buses we still get stuck. Several years ago I purchased a military six wheet drive tow truck which we keep chained up most of the time to retrieve stuck buses."
